March 11, 2014

A national network dedicated to improving U.S. elections presented Berman DeValerio Special Counsel Kevin Shelley with an award for his work to protect “the integrity of the voting process” as California’s Secretary of State.

The Election Verification Network presented its EVN Award to Mr. Shelley at its March 6 annual conference in San Diego. According to the Network, the award “is intended to recognize champions whose work in the field of election integrity sometimes goes unnoticed.”

“While California Secretary of State, you generated national attention for your efforts to ensure the integrity of the voting process,” EVN Director of Operations Wanda Irving wrote in an email notifying Mr. Shelley about the honor. “You were recognized as one of the nation’s most outspoken advocates of paper records for voting on touch-screen machines. Through difficult and challenging situations, your fortitude and grace was meritorious.”

Mr. Shelley served as California’s Secretary of State from 2003 to 2005. Prior to winning statewide office, he served in the California State Assembly and on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. During his tenure on the Board of Supervisors, Mr. Shelley spent three years as a trustee on the San Francisco Retirement Board. In the State Assembly, his accomplishments included improving conditions at nursing homes, drafting new corporate accountability requirements and creating a restitution fund for victims of corporate fraud. He also spent several years on the Assembly’s Public Employee and Retirement Security Committee, which made and oversaw laws related to public pension funds in California. He joined Berman DeValerio in 2006.

“Working with Kevin every day, he is so modest that we can sometimes forget the range and depth of his achievements during his long career as a legislator and state official,” said Nicole Lavallee, managing partner of Berman DeValerio’s San Francisco office. “We are proud that he has chosen Berman DeValerio as a platform to continue to advocate for improvements to the lives of public employees, union workers and consumers.”
